“Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.” (Dorothea Lang)
Every year I look forward to spending a couple of days photographing families, but what I loved most about mini session weekend this year was the variety in the phases of life I was able to capture – ranging from a couple expecting their first born to teenagers who’ve become almost as tall as their parents.
And though I understand that families are seeking a holiday card worthy photo during these thirty minute sessions (i.e. one that won’t get you featured on a future “most awkward family photo” blog post), the ultimate significance of the time spent in front of my camera is the freezing of that phase of life they’re in. Because though we don’t ever want to really think about it too much, time is fleeting, and photographs are the only way to hold onto that visual of years gone by.
For one day the baby will be out of your belly, the three year old will lose her baby teeth and stop making those cute bunny faces, the first grader will put her lovie away in a keepsake box, and the teenagers will be grown ups with their own families. But you’ll have those frozen snippets of tangible memories to spark the age of saying of “remember when?” and be grateful that you took the time to capture your past.
So thank you for those of you who took the time to invest in preserving your family’s history. It’s an honor and a joy to document these sweet days of life for you.
