Aselin’s Birth Day

When Maggie first approached me about documenting her home birth, I’ll admit I was hesitant. Lots of uncertainties went through my head: What if I commit and I can’t make it the day labor happens? What if I can’t stay the entire labor and then miss the big moment? What if I’m there for the big moment but get so overhwhelmed by witnessing the birth of a new baby that I forget to use my camera? What if, what if, what if.

Well, this has been the year of me getting over my fear of “what if’s,” and what drives my passion for photography more than anything is capturing real moments, real emotions, and real life. So I said yes. And because I said yes, I was granted the privilege of capturing Maggie being amazingly calm and strong as she worked through labor pains…her kind husband Jesse being her rock when she needed extra strength…the midwives offering comfort and reassurance….and then Aselin’s break-of-day debut into the world. Her first breath, first cry, first embrace, first check-up, first bath, first feeding. First moments of life. It just doesn’t get more real than that, and how blessed I was to be part of such a beautiful experience.
